Carmen, their experienced guide, directs her group of seven as they launch the raft to float from Lajitas through the Santa Elena Canyon. Completing their group are four college-age “kids”— a guy and three gals. Also in the park is Judith Pierson, Mayor of Houston, who has chosen Chisos Mountain Lodge at Big Bend as the place to announce her candidacy for governor of Texas and showcase her views on immigration. With her are her husband Charles, her security team, and other dignitaries. Members of the press and park staff are also on hand. The raft trip is relaxing and beautiful at first, but becomes tricky when swift rapids loom ahead. The water level seems to be rising fast, probably due to heavy rains that have fallen upstream. After a diversion involving a stranded cow, the group discovers the body of a pregnant woman floating in the water. Can she be saved? Suddenly the raft is carried away by the current and all gear is lost. The water is rising faster. Maybe the party can climb out of the canyon, but then someone starts shooting at them from above! With her skill and courage, Anna takes control of everyone’s safety and addresses the questions of who is shooting at them, and why. Could it be someone from the mayor’s group? Heart-stopping action, well-drawn characters, and many plot twists will keep you guessing. This latest book about Anna Pigeon is almost impossible to put down. ■ Carole C.
