Valdosta Technical College Holds Ribbon- Cutting At Its Haas Technical Education Center

Valdosta Technical College recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its new Haas Technical Education Center (HTEC).

The newcenter is the result of a partnership between Valdosta-Lowndes Co.

IndustrialAuthority, Valdosta Tech,Haas Automation and Jeffreys Manufacturing Solutions. Haas Automation is a major CNC machinery manufacturer, whose equipment is used by manufacturersSuch as SteedaAutosports that recently moved to the area and other metalcutting manufacturers.

“The Haas Technical Education Center will allow Valdosta Tech machine tool technology students to learn about state-of-the-art equipment used in the workplace. The ability to train students and produce experienced graduates is also attractive tomanufacturing prospects looking to relocate to the area,” said Dr. Ray Perren, President, Valdosta Technical College.

The HTEC will also serve as the state’s only Haas HTEC showroom, in which Haas and its distributor, Jeffreys Manufacturing Solutions, will be able to demonstrate its newest technology to potential users and buyers.

“Recruiting companies to the Valdosta MSA is a team sport, and we are so fortunate to have such innovative partners like Valdosta Technical College thatmake our job somuch easier,” said Brad Lofton, executive director of the Valdosta-Lowndes County Industrial Authority. “The Haas center will develop top-tier employees in the hightech machine tooling arena. This ultimately benefits our efforts to attract new industry while simultaneously providing tangible support for our very important existing industry base.” The center has four Haas control simulators, two verticalmachining centers (used in mold-and-die shops and production facilities), a horizontal machining center (used in automotive and heavy manufacturing), a turning center, a CNC tool-room lathe and CNC tool-room mill. The total value of the equipment is more than $400,000.

Two machines and control simulators were purchased by VTC and the VTC Foundat ion.

Haas and Jeffreys have ent rus t ed two machines to the school for a two-year period.

Two toolroommachines wi l l b e pro - vided by Jeffreys on a six to twelve month rotation.

“The Haas Technical Education Center will take Valdos ta Tech’ s machine tool t e c h n o l o g y program to a whole new level,” said Angela Crance, VP for Economic Development at Valdosta Tech. “The generosity and support of Haas and Jeffreys, especially now when educational resources are limited, is so overwhelming and encouraging. This is a true investment in the students and their futures. We are so grateful to these new partners and look forward to continuing to advance the machine tool program with their help.” Lou Santoro, Sales Manager at Jeffreys Manufacturing Solutions, said, “Haas Automation has tasked us and other Haas Factory Outlets with the HTEC program to create opportunities for technological education in colleges and universities. We believe that this program will produce a well-trained and skilled workforce.” Valdosta Tech offers a technical certificate, diploma and associate of applied science degree in machine tool technology.

Carl Zeiss Builds And Delivers 2,000th Contura G2 CMM.

Carl Zeiss IMT Corporation recently announced that it has built and delivered its 2,000th CONTURA G2 coordinate measuring machine (CMM) to Schmiede Corporation of Tullahoma, TN.

The CONTURA G2 was introduced in December of 2005 and since then, the Maple Grove, MN, manufacturing facility has produced 2,000 of the advanced scanning machines. “This is the most successful machine CarlZeiss IMT has ever developed,” said Josef Schernthaner, Vice President of Operations at Carl Zeiss IMT. “The reason behind the success of this machine, even in the current economy, is the CONTURA G2s flexibility in sensors and its excellent price performance ratio. The CONTURA G2 was a high demand product right out of the gate and is still a very sought after machine.

Sales continue to be strong and customers are extremely satisfied with its unique features.” The bridge-type CMM features the next generation scanning platform and is available in three configurations, CONTURA G2 direkt, CONTURA G2 RDS and CONTURA G2 aktiv. All models use Zeiss VAST technology and offer the same high accuracy with either articulating scanning or active scanning, the company said.

“Schmiede Corporation is a dynamic and growing woman-owned precision contract machining shop that has been in business since 1963,” said a spokesperson. “The main industries they serve are power generation, automotive, aircraft, heavy truck manufacturing, offroad equipment and specialty pumps.

Currently, Schmeide Corporation owns a Zeiss PRISMO, and because of its reliability and accuracy they have purchased the CONTURA G2 to support new contracts within their aerospace and nuclear power generation divisions.” “We’ve been using the Zeiss PRISMO for more than eight years, and we’ve found that Zeiss’s products are the most accurate and reliable, so we are very excited to obtain the CONTURA G2,” said Steve Williams, Sales and Marketing Manager at Schmiede Corporation.

“Sticking with the Zeiss line of products adds accuracy and continuity within our business lines since many of our customers also use Zeiss machines.” CONTURA G2 RDS is designed for measuring complex features and parts with multiple angles that require smaller styli. It features the Zeiss RDS articulating probe holder that can reach 20,376 positions in 2.5-degree increments and the VAST XXT probe for articulating scanning. VAST XXT can be used with styli up to 250 mm in length and styli as small as 0.3 mm. Its large deflection range and low measuring force make it a very robust scanning sensor, the company said.

“CONTURA G2 aktiv is ideal for measuring deep features, self-centering and high throughput needs,” said a spokesperson. “It is available with the VAST XT sensor for multi-point measurement of size, form and position.

VAST XT offers active scanning and single-point measuring. With its highspeed, high-point density capability, VAST XT is suitable for all applications in curve and free-form metrology and reverse engineering. It can be equipped with extensions up to 500 mm and support styli weights of up to 500 g. “CONTURA G2 direkt provides an affordable means of entering the world of scanning technology from Carl Zeiss for production and progress inspection of single processing stages. The CMM is equipped with the VAST XXT scanning sensor and is designed for measurements on small parts with normal, squared geometries. These parts are usually generated by boring and milling centers in 2.5 or 3D processes.

In general, a small single stylus or star stylus is sufficient. The VAST XXT scanning sensor enables measurements of geometry, form and position. Plastic and metal parts can also be measured.

“CONTURA G2 is available with the CAD-based scanning CALYPSO software and its extensions Gear-Pro for gear measurement and Blade-Pro for blade measurement. CALYPSO can be combined with HOLOS, designed for the measurement of 3D surfaces. Measuring programs generated in CALYPSO can be effectively used on a wide range of measuring machines and in different areas. A measuring program created offline with CALYPSO can be used to manually measure unfinished parts.

Subsequently, the same program can be used on a CNC coordinate measuring machine for an acceptance test measurement of the finished part.” For more information contact: Carl Zeiss IMT Corp. 6250 Sycamore Lane Maple Grove, MN 55369 763-744-2400 / Fax: 763-533-0219 www.zeiss.com/imt Steve Williams Schmiede Corporation
