Oerlikon Surface Solutions Awarded Long-Term Agreement

Oerlikon’s Surface Solutions Segment has been awarded a 10-year longterm agreement by Snecma worth more than CHF 90 million. The agreement is for the supply of Leading Edge Aviation Propulsion (LEAP) engine components. “This marks a significant milestone in the partnership between Snecma and Oerlikon Metco which has been built over the years,” said a company spokesperson.

Snecma, part of the international high-technology Safran group, has awarded Oerlikon Metco’s unit Eldim the manufacture of low-pressure turbine components. “Developed under the LEAP program, the engine is a newgeneration high-bypass turbofan with a primary application to power the next generation of single-aisle commercial aircraft,” said the spokesperson. “The LEAP engine has been designed and developed by CFM International, a 50/50 joint venture between Snecma and General Electric. The new LEAP engine incorporates a number of innovative yet proven technologies that meet the challenges faced by aircraft manufacturers and airlines alike. As a result, LEAP engines provide operators with significant reductions in fuel consumption, noise and emissions.”

According to the company, the LEAP-1Awas chosen by Airbus as one of the engines offered on Airbus’ new A320neo aircraft. “The new aircraft/ power plant combination should enter commercial service in 2016 after engine certification in 2015,” said the spokesperson. The LEAP-1B was selected by Boeing as the exclusive power plant for the 737 MAX. Engine certification is planned in 2016, with entry into service in 2017. The LEAP-1C was selected by Comac of China to power the new C919 single-aisle jetliner. Engine certification is scheduled for 2015. “Metco will empower Snecma to bring the LEAP program to the market on time,” said the spokesperson.

New 5-Axis VMC Features Compact Design

Doosan has introduced its DNM 200/5AX vertical machining center (VMC). “This newest member of our DNM series is compact, reliable and affordable,” said a company spokesperson. “It is ideal for machining complex prismatic parts by reducing set-up time and ensuring consistent accuracy without taking up too much valuable space on the shop floor.”

Integrated Trunnion 5-axis

Table The DNM200/5AX is a purpose- built 5-axis VMC featuring a built-in 4th and 5th axis trunnion table allowing for the machining of multiple faces on complex prismatic workpieces without having to refixture. “This design provides for more available Z-axis clearance than a traditional VMC with a rotary system placed on the standard table,” said the spokesperson. “Precision and repeatability are superior as well, due to the reduction in stacked tolerances.” The platter size is 7.87” in diameter, which is designed to allow for a maximum workpiece of 11.81” in diameter and 7.87” in height. The maximum table load is 88 lbs.

Roller-Type LM Guideways

“As with all Doosan DNM series VMCs, all linear guideways feature roller-type bearings, delivering three times more rigidity and double the lifespan. Additional benefits include optimal weight and force distribution, superior stiffness, accuracy and surface finish,” said the spokesperson.

Direct-Coupled Spindle

The direct-coupled spindle drive system is a true cartridge-type unit supported by high precision ceramic ball bearings that offer minimal noise, vibration and thermal growth due to the absence of gears or belts inside the spindle head body. The 12,000 RPM, 15/25 Hpmotor has 86 ft-lbs. Of torque with a spindle accel/decel time of 0-12k (2.16 sec.)/12k-0 (2.21 sec.).

Bed, Column and Saddle Construction

The bed is a rigid, one piece casting made from fine grain Meehanite cast iron with heavy ribbing to help prevent vibration and deformation during heavy cutting. “Extra wide spacing of the roller guideways provide for excellent support of the saddle, regardless of the load distribution on the table,” said the spokesperson. “The table is fully supported by the saddle in all positions with no overhang. The rigid box type column casting is heavily ribbed to help prevent twisting or distortion as well as helping to dampen vibration during high-speed or heavy machining.”
