Greenerd Delivers Hydraulic Compression Molding Presses To Sheet Molder
Greenerd Press & Machine Company, Inc. has announced that it has recently delivered and installed three 4,000 ton Gib-Guided hydraulic compression molding presses to Ashley Industrial Molding, a processor of sheet molding compound located in Oelwein, IA. The presses, which feature Allen Bradley controls, provide comprehensive Feedback and control over the entire production process, which allowsAshley to improve part quality, reduce cycle times and expand their business, the company said.
The 4,000 ton compression molding machines were built in Tianjin, China, by Tianjin Tianduan Press Co. Ltd, wi th whom Greenerd has an exclusive North American alliance.
Each combined frame Gib-Guided press weighs about 500 metric tons and was assembled using quality Americanmade parts thatwere imported to China fromthe
U. S. for the press’ vital operational components.
The giant presses tower 34 feet above and 11 feet below the shop floor.
They are the largest compression molding machines Greenerd has ever delivered, the biggest presses thatAshley has operated and possibly the largest compressionmolding press installation in North America, said the company.
The machines featureAllen Bradley Industrial PC Versa View 6181P- 12TPXPH with Win XP Software with touchscreen controls that provide recipe storage, trending, diagnostics and Ethernet communication. The controls allow the operator to access feedback on each part in a run, troubleshoot problems and adjust tonnages and speed as necessary, identify the most efficient way to produce a part and reduce cycle times. The controls also provide Ashley with something they’ve never had before, the ability to serialize each part, which opened up new business opportunities for the company. In addition, the Ethernet communicationwill allowAshley to monitor production in its Iowa plant from its Indiana headquarters.
“We are extremely pleased about this project,” said Tim Dining, President of Greenerd Press & Machine Company, Inc. “I am proud to say we met the challenge through every phase, from design to production and installation, which is a testament to our large press capabilities.” Delivering the massive presses was indeed a logistical challenge. After they were disassembled in China, the hydraulic presses took up 60 percent of an ocean freighter. Theywere then shipped on three barges up theMississippi River from New Orleans to Dubuque, IA, where they were delivered to Oelwein on 53 semi-trailer truck loads. They were then re-assembled and installed onsite by Greenerd technicians.
“I couldn’t be more pleased with how this purchase and delivery went,” said Scott Pflughoeft, VP of Manufacturing at Ashley. “Greenerd had all three presses assembled, installed and in production in just 60 days. They stayed on-site fine-tuning the programming and making adjustments until everything was running smoothly.” For more information contact: Tim Dining, President Greenerd Press &Machine Co., Inc.
Shamrock Machinery Introduces Ryazan RT950F4-6 Lathe
S h amr o c k Machinery took delivery of a 74- inch swing by 256-inch centers Ryazan 4-axis 4-way CNC lathe in December
2009. Recommended workpiece weight is up to 35 tons without Steady support and 40 tonswith a steady rest. This CNC lathe is available for immediate sale and is capable of turning conical and spherical surfaces, machining complex surfaces, thread cutting, slot milling, thread milling, curvilinear slot milling, milling of flat surfaces, drilling and tapping and other operations.
The spindle has a bore of 12.5” diameter and has front and rear 2-20M spindle mounts that greatly increase the versatility of the lathe. The headstock has three spindle RPM ranges.
The maximum spindle speeds for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd range are 42 rev/min, 138 rev/min and 240 rev/min, respectively.
The main motor is 134 HP.
The bed design is pass-through so that the carriage is allowed to travel past steady rests and the tailstock along the full bed length. The Z-axis travel includes a double rack and pinion reduction box with scale feedback to the Fanuc control.
The Ryazan RT950F4, as equipped, has a Sauter 0.5.320.040H4-position automatic head type turret with a vertical axis of rotation, measuring 18 inches square. The Sema 150milling/drilling/ tapping attachment is driven by a 30/37kW (39/48 HP Fanuc motor and drive) and has an ISO50 taper. The Sema 150 Y-axis travel is 13 inches and is driven by a Fanuc motor and drive.
Grinding attachments and other accessories are available upon request.

IMTS To Host Industry Inspiration Day
IMTS (The International Manufacturing Technology Show) management will host the first-ever Industry Inspiration Day as part of the September 13 kick-off for the all-new IMTS Industry & Technology Conference. IMTS is one of the largest industrial trade shows in the world, with thousands of exhibitors and more than 91,000 visitors.
Highlighting the opening day’s events will be a keynote luncheon program featuring speakers from key industrial markets including aerospace,Automotive, energy andmedicalmanufacturing.
A round-table panel discussion will conclude the luncheon program, whichwill be held from12:00 PM to 3:00 PM in the Industry & Technology Conference area of the West building of Chicago’s McCormick Place.
IMTS attendees registered for a conference session will be admitted to the luncheon program. Exhibiting company representatives will also be eligible to attend on an RSVP basis.
“IMTS attendees repeatedly tell us that they come to the show to learn, to network and to find newresources and innovative manufacturing technology resources,” said John Krisko, IMTS Director
- Exhibitions. “We are committing significant energy and resources to make the conference the premier educational offering available to themanufacturing industry.” The IMTS Industry & Technology Conference will bring the industry together, under one roof and at one time, to discuss new opportunities, network with industry peers and explore innovative ways to overcome day-to-day and long-range challenges.
The conference program, September 14-17, will focus on six topic tracks featuring a wide range of industry specific sessions including:
• Materials Engineering (Physical Properties, What’s New, Future [R&D]).
• Machining Technology & Trends (General Cutting [turning, milling, etc.], Grinding, Tooling/Workholding).
• Alternative Manufacturing Processes (Waterjet, Laser, EDM, Welding, Fastening/ Joining).
• Metrology (Measuring, Testing, Inspection, 3-D Inspection, Standards).
• Plant Operations (Lean Manufacturing, CAD/CAM, Training/Work Force, Government, Energy Efficiency, MTConnect).
• Rapid Prototyping.
H&R Mfg. And Supply, Inc. Expands Capabilities
H&R Mfg. And Supply, Inc., an industry leader in workholding, manufactures custom designed and standard products for all workholding needs.
H&R has expanded its product offering recently by adding many heavy duty products such as its new low-profile, extra heavy-duty boring mill jaws.
H&R has also expanded its manufacturing capabilities. Even in a down economy, H&R is looking to expand by recently adding a new Accutex 6-axis capable wire EDM machine as well as a new 40 taper Johnford CNC mill. Since This is the first EDM machine for H&R, they wanted a flexible and highly-optioned machine to suit current and future needs. TheAccutexAU-300-I EDM Machine was their choice. It has a table workspace of 13.8” X, 9.8” Y and 8.7” in Z height. H&R also bought the PEPS EDM wire cut software CAD-CAM system for this machine.
“TheAccutex EDMhasmany bonus features including a flushing operation where themachined part doesn’t have to be submerged to be machined,” said a company spokesperson. “The Accutex EDM also has an automatic wire threading operation which will allow H&R to return to the cutting operation faster than most traditional machines. H&R is looking to expand its own process through better accuracy as well as provide customers with complex part machining capabilities that will hold
0. 00004 inches. The true 5-axis machine capability will allow us to do many odd shapes and angles with a one-time cut rather than the traditional straight line 3- axis thatmany othermachines provide.”
