Index Releases New R200 Turning Milling Center

INDEX Corporation is introducing a new design in turning/ milling centers that allows the machine to accomplish complex machining on difficult materials in half the time it would require on conventional turn/ mills, according to INDEX.

“The design of the INDEX R200 allows it to machine equivalent workpieces almost twice as fast as commercially available turning/milling centers that use only a motorized milling spindle,” said an INDEX spokesperson.

“One motorized milling spindle and one work spindle each are assigned to one another in two subsystems located one above the other permitting highly productive and flexible Machining, including simultaneous and independent 5-axis machining on both spindles.

“The innovative axis arrangement produces directional kinematics, which in turn enables comprehensive and complete machining. Within the machine design the main spindle moves in Z, the sub-spindle in X and Z, milling spindle one (top) in X/Y/B and milling spindle two (bottom) in Y/B. The result is amachinewith two independent subsystems, exceptional stiffness and impressive dynamic response.Workpieces can be machined efficiently and in parallel on the front and reverse sides.

“The R200 can accomplish full reverse sidemachining aswell as parallel machining. Both heavy-duty roughing operations and highly accurate fineturning operations can be performed simultaneously on the main spindle and sub-spindle.

“To assure a high degree of thermal stability and vibration damping to enable machining of difficult-to-cut and high-strength materials, the R200 has a vertical cast machine bed with a heavily ribbed, enclosed modular design.

“Two separate shuttle units independently load the two motorized milling spindleswith theHSK-A40 tools required in each case from a common chain tool magazine. With 80 or 120 places, the INDEX R200 has an extensive tool stock. Short chip-to-chip times of approximately four seconds contribute significantly to the minimization of secondary processing times.Whilemachining is performed on the main spindle, the lowermilling spindle can load a new tool, protected from falling chips and coolant. The results in high productivity and improves process reliability.

“The two quill-guided motorized milling spindles are located in the center of the machine bed. This diagonal arrangement allowed the usual crossslide to be omitted. When combined with the play-free and wear-free hydrostatic circular guide, an overall system with exceptional stiffness is produced.

“The R200 exhibits high acceleration and rapid traverse rates due to the powerful drives andweight-optimized assemblies. Key data, such as 11 kW power and 18,000 RPM, milling spindles as well as 0.9 s ramp-up time (0 to 5,000 RPM) make possible the highperformance machining operations.”

Emag Releases New Ba 322 Machining Center

Schwäbische Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH (SW) has introduced the BA 322, targeted at the 4- or 5-axis machining of small to medium size workpieces in steel, cast iron and light alloy.

“BA 322 stands for 300 mm distance between the two spindles and two work tables,” said a company spokesperson. “This brief but accurate classification paraphrases the presently smallest frame size of SW’s series of heavy-duty machining centers.

As a sensible addition to the successful single-table type BA 321 the BA 322 now covers the medium range of workpieces, such as wheel flanges or components for hydraulic valves and turbo chargers. Unlike the BA 321 with its simple design of workholding unit, a single clamping Schwäbische Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH (SW) has introduced the BA 322, targeted at the 4- or 5-axis machining of small to medium size workpieces in steel, cast iron and light alloy.

Unlike the BA 321 with its simple design of workholding unit, a single clamping 100% energy recovery. New feed drives work at lower speeds than before. This not only lowers the energy consumption and noise emission of the acceleration process, but also increases the life expectancy of the ball screw drives, by keeping thermal growth at a minimum.

The concept was first introduced at EMO 2007 on the BA 321 and has stood the test of time.” Open on All Sides “The machining center was designed to be highly efficient. This has been realized, as will become evident from a look at: coolant supply, flange contact surfacemonitor, hydraulic pack and positive-locking, actuated, wear resistant tool receptor,” the spokesperson said. “In lieu of synthetics, Swrelies on lost-wax-cast collets in high-alloyed steel, controlled by a cylinder andmonitored as towhether the tool is correctly locked.Achoice of three different sizes of magazine, located over the machining area, can be inserted into the monobloc with ease and are easy to expand.

Tools are changed using the pick-up system. The untensioned chain of the magazine reaches speeds of up to 80 m/min and runs in a link rail.

Retightening is definitely unnecessary.

“The hydraulic pack is required because SW does not only offer the clamping fixtures with its components but also provides the elements necessary to control them. Each of the two workholding units on the twin swivel trunnion of the BA322 is controlled by up to eight hydraulic pipes and an additional five pneumatic ones, all featur ing rotary di s t r ibutor s . For machines of this size such arrangements are the exception rather than the rule. The basic hydraulics are part of the standard machine, so that only the relevant valve modules need to be added.
