Doraville Wins Okuma Machine Tool
Okuma America Corporation has selected Doraville Custom Machine Services, Inc. (DCMS) thewinner in the Real Help Machine Tool Giveaway contest. Charles Blair, DCMS owner, submitted a video entry answering the question “How can an Okuma help your business?” “Mr. Blair’s video was selected from a pool of nearly 400 entries,” said an Okuma spokesperson.
“DCMS was founded in early 2007 by my father and I,” saidMr. Blair. “Our first machine was a used CNC lathe. While it wasn’t a bad machine, its limitations were made apparent very quickly. I soon needed a CNC mill and found a capable used machine. This was a nice machine but it soon needed to be upgraded, and in 2008 I bought a used Okuma Howa machining center. This machine really opened our shop to some new opportunities and we began to see the possibilities of a more productionoriented business. Over the past two years, our company has specialized in prototype work for research facilities and the medical industry. We are now planning to branch into more productiontype work. I entered the contest because of our need for a first-class production machining system. Our existing equipment was not the best kind suited for production work,” said Mr. Blair.
“We are pleased that we can offer real help toMr. Blair and his company,” said Larry Schwartz, President and COO of Okuma America Corporation.
“We want to help them grow their business.” “Representatives from Okuma and Morris South, a division of Morris Group, Inc., one of Okuma’s distributors, worked with Mr. Blair to determine which Okuma machine would be best suited for DCMS’ current and future needs. The decision was the Okuma Captain L370-M lathe and the machine was installed in February,” said an Okuma spokesperson.
“A component that previously took eight minutes, using more than onemachine, now takes a little over twominutes on one machine,” said Blair. “I can now machine the entire part on the new Okuma Captain L370-M lathe without the need to do finish work on a separate machine.” “I enjoy the challenge of working with various industries and new products,” said Blair.
“In addition to the medical devices we sometimes repair or modify, we manufacture parts for a lifting system used to repair and maintain wind turbines, new products used in law enforcement, LED lamp designs, parts for electric car projects, and several new and emerging technologies. We work with a wide range of materials including aluminum, stainless steel and polymers. I enjoy these projects and each one of them has some future potential but only if I have the right machine tool equipment at the right time. I am confident that the new Okuma Captain L370-M lathe will help take my company to that next level.”
Mr. Blair’s entry and all the contest entriesare postdonlineat http://oac.okuma.com/giveaway.
In addition to prizes from Okuma, members of Partners in THINC provided entry prizes and prizes for the weekly winners and the finalists. Participating sponsors include: Sandvik- Coromant, Iscar Metals, Inc., Renishaw, Schunk, Caron Engineering, Zoller, Iemca, FANUC Robotics and Marposs.

NTMA Chairman Ron Overton Speaks to Local Chapters
Ron Overton, 2009 Chairman of the NTMA (National Tooling & Machining Association), has been speaking with local NTMA Chapters and letting members know first-hand the benefits of being an NTMA member.
Ron Overton is President of Overton Industries, Mooresville, IN. “I’ve traveled all over the United States visiting shops and local NTMAchapters. Overall, I see business picking up, especially in nuclear and defense and somewhat inmedical. There is also growing interest in the energy/wind industry, although there are questions when dealing with the foreign companies involved, will they be around to pay you?”
“First, the state of the NTMA, it currently has $14 million in assets. The headquarters aremoving to Independence (Cleveland area), OH, and co-locating with the PMA (Precision Metal Forming Association), this will help with the overall efficiency of the organization. The NTMA Insurance Program is gaining ground; it is backed by Zurich.
“On the legislative front, Franklin Partners is the lobbying firm for both the NTMA and PMA. The turnout for the ‘NTMA Goes to DC Day’ last year was low, we only had 100 people out of 2,500 members show up for this. I’d like to see a larger turnout for this event this year. The joint NTMA/PMA Legislative Conference will be held April 20-21, 2010, at The Westin Washington, DC City Center. I encourage you to attend.
“NTMAis fighting for those members involved with the automotive industry. NTMA representatives have met with GM, Chrysler and the Auto Task Force in DC. The TARP money that has been paid to Tier 1 companies has not beenmaking it down to the Tier 2 companies, we have made sure that Washington, along with GM and Chrysler, is aware of this. NTMAis also working on payment terms for die standards so that members can get paid in a timely manner for tooling.
“NTMA has continuous training programs. Included in this is the NTMA’s National Robotics league for robotics competition. This attracts young people and gets theminterested inmanufacturing. There is also the National Apprenticeship Contest that involves tool and die, milling and grinding. I would like to see more participation at this year’s event in Indianapolis, IN.
“The NTMAbelieves in helping its members with the Members First program, this is an outsource guide for NTMA members. Other ways that members can benefit from their membership is by attending conferences. As an example, theNTMAFall Conference was a success. There were speakers who covered topics on aerospace, defense, grants, web search engine optimization and more. I encourage members to not only attend the local meetings but also the national ones.
Here is a list of upcoming events:
• NTMA/PMAContract Manufacturing Purchasing Fair, BringingWork Back to the U.S.A., May 12, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency, Irvine, CA.
• Joint NTMAFall Conference & PMA Annual Meeting, October 6-10, 2010, Amelia Island Plantation, Amelia Island, FL.
• NTMA/PMAContract Manufacturing Purchasing Fair, October 29, 2010, MGM Grand at Foxwoods, Mashantucket, CT. “To make the point of benefiting from participating nationally, and networking with your fellow NTMA members, let me share some experiences thatwe have had atmy company, Overton Industries. I was looking to proceed with ISO registration, as you know, this can be difficult. I found a local NTMAmember company that offered me guidance on this at no charge.
When I asked how I could repay them, the answer was ‘Help another NTMA company.’ “We experienced a fire at one of our facilities, the building and the machinery was destroyed. NTMA members from across the country offered both people and machines to help us get back up and running, we were operational in a week and we did not even miss a product shipment.
“The NTMA Purchasing Fairs are very beneficial formaking contacts that are in need of your expertise. We met our largest customer at an NTMAPurchasing Fair.” For more information contact: NTMA 9300 Livingston Road Ft. Washington, MD 20744 800-248-6862 Fax: 301-248-7104 info@ntma.org www.ntma.org
